Henshaws

In 2005 Sprite started a relationship with a very special charity, Henshaws College, based in Harrogate.

Henshaws Society for Blind People was founded by northern businessman Thomas Henshaw in 1837 and is committed to working for blind and visually impaired people of all ages across the north of England.

Henshaws College is a leading provider of the highest quality specialist Further Education to young blind and visually impaired people, who have additional learning difficulties or physical disabilities.

Sprite decided it wasn’t enough just to offer proceeds from our programme sales and so began to look at ways of involving the students from Henshaws in our Pre-show entertainment. We also provide the students with workshops, giving them an opportunity to experience Shakespeare outside the classroom.

In previous years, after a few drama workshops we settled on creating our own interpretation of Lewis Carol’s poem ‘The Jabberwocky’. With only 5 or 6 rehearsals it was quite amazing what the students produced as an end performance piece. It wasn’t just a recital of the poem but a sound and picture scape that enhanced and improved the already wonderful piece of literature. The students had 2 performances in front of 250 people and were given a wonderful reception!

Sprite are delighted to be supporting Henshaws again this year with proceeds from programme sales being donated to them, and we look forward to seeing what exciting work they produce this time round.
